“Tire replacement Looking to replace the Pirelli Scorpion Zero all seasons on my ‘23 Volvo XC40 recharge. Are people sticking with the OEM tires or is there another all season tire you would recommend. Looking for similar ride quality with more wear than the Pirellis.”

Tire A

Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 PLUS

Positive

The community generally views the DWS 06 Plus as one of the best ultra-high-performance all-season tires. Owners praise its wet and dry grip, ride comfort, quietness, and light-snow manners, and many compare it favorably to the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4, often at a lower price. Criticisms include inconsistent tread life (some report about 25k miles while others get 50k), balancing difficulty, soft sidewall or squirmy feel, noise as the tires age, and the fact that they are not a substitute for dedicated winter tires.

“Apex VS-5RS 17x9 on Mk. 8.5 Just had my Apex 17” wheels shoed with Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus XL tires in 245/45/17 size. I’ve only driven it a few miles but the ride quality is definitely superior to the OEM wheel/tire combo on bad road surfaces. Wheel color is Anthracite. For anyone in the Westchester / Yonkers / Bronx area I highly recommend The Wheel Doctor for fitments.”

“I have 4 of the DWS, manual transmission. I drive spiritedly most of the time. I just replaced the back two last week (at about 24,000 miles), because I didn't rotate them. The fronts still had 7-8/32nds of tread left in them. The traction light came on briefly the next day while entering the interstate. For the few miles to the next exit, the car seemed to sway as if in high winds, leading me to check the lug nuts, even though I witnessed the tire tech torque them the day before. Then I remembered posting here after the original 4 were installed that the the car felt like it was driving on Jello. I believe this is due to the tread design for snow and rain. The "wiggle" takes a while to go away, after some tread depth loss. Because of this, I will be replacing them with something else in the next wear cycle. I guess it's time to consider 4 new wheels for winter all season tires instead of riding on all season , all year.”

“Back in the day, I ran summer tires on an MK5 GTI and swore I’d never do that again, as I only got 20k miles out of them. I’ve had 3 other GTIs since and have always run Ultra High Performance All Seasons with zero issues. On my MK7.5 , I’m currently running CONTINENTAL EXTREME CONTACT DWS 06 PLUS and absolutely love them! They’re probably the best tires I’ve run on the 4 GTIs I’ve owned over the years!!! 👍🏾 BTW… I’m in Northern California, where the seasons don’t hit like other parts of the country. 😅”

Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season

Mixed

Community sentiment regarding the Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season is mixed, with users commending its quiet ride, comfortable handling, and competent wet and snow traction. However, significant criticism centers on poor tread life, rapid wear, and chunking, leading several drivers to explore alternative brands or other Pirelli variants. Additional discussions frequently involve comparisons against OEM setups, the higher cost of PNCS foam-equipped models, and vehicle compatibility.

IMHO, you don't need to worry about noise on the AS+3-generation of Scorpion tires. Pirelli engineered the thread pattern to have many small cuts in the inner-middle patch to disperse the energy across a wider frequency range and thus breaking down the noise. On hwy, the wind noise easily drowns out any tire noise. Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 is said to be quieter than Pirelli Scorpion WeatherActive, as per reviews. In that case, even if I go with "Pirelli Scorpion WeatherActive", I won't feel much of the difference in quietness of it in comparison to "Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3", and I can go with WeatherActive, as that will better perform in bad weather. Is my understanding correct, practically?”

“My 2020 GLC63 CPO came with the Michelin Latitude Sport 3 summer tires with 6k miles on them. It is getting cold here in PA/NJ and in the parking lot they were starting to crab walk on me, feels terrible. Since I may also get caught in snow and need to get home I decided to go with all-seasons. My tire sizes are 265/45/20 front and 295/40/20 rear. I ordered Pirelli Scorpion Zero All-Season Plus tires. No more crabbing and a much better ride. They look better too. If you will be driving in cold temps I recommend them. They also have a 500 treadwear rating, so they should last a while. The Latitudes at 6k miles were fairly worn. My wife has a 2022 Mercedes GLE350 AMG line appearance package and it has the same Pirellis and rides great.”

“I'm pretty happy with them. they seem to have good grip. Was driving through 1-2" snow with no dramas. I was actually trying to break them loose in the wet and it was more difficult than I thought it would be. I am also stock.”

How do we compare tires?

Every category score blends two independent signals. 60% comes from professional tire tests (braking distances, lap times, noise measurements), each result compared with every other tire in the same test and newer tests counting more. 40% comes from owner reviews found online, adjusted for how generously each site rates. Both use one scale: the average tested tire gets 70, the best 100. When a tire has only one of the two, the missing half is estimated from the other and the score stays closer to average; with no road test and fewer than five owner reviews it gets no score yet.

Handling is the exception: road tests measure it inside the dry and wet scores, so its own row comes from owner ratings only and starts as less important.
