Tire B Proxes RA1

Pros

  • Exceptional dry grip that remains consistent even as the tread wears down.
  • Superior tire life compared to many other dedicated track-focused compounds.
  • Predictable breakaway characteristics that provide driver confidence at the limit.

Cons

  • Performance can become 'greasy' if the tire is overdriven or overheated during long sessions.
  • Requires proper heat cycling and break-in procedures to achieve optimal performance.
  • Sensitive to alignment settings, which can lead to accelerated or uneven wear if not managed.

Tire A

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+

Positive

Community members widely praise the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ for its dry handling, wet grip, and substantial improvement in ride comfort over stock tires. However, several users express reservations about its poor traction in genuine snow conditions and note that road noise can become prominent as the tread wears. It is frequently compared against competitors like the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 as well as its successor, the Pilot Sport All Season 4.

“been driving on them for about 2 weeks! I was running pilot super sports during the summer and was very happy with them so I went with the pilot sport A/S 3+ for the winter. So far I have been pleased with the traction in wet and below freezing conditions. Haven't driven in snow yet so can't comment on that yet. They handle nearly as well as my old super sports in the corners and have significantly less road noise. Obviously they are all season tires so they won't have the most amazing performance driving experience compared to summer tires, but I think they are a good practical compromise for our cars.”

“With the compounds used on the newer summer tires, I won't be able to use them here in northern Illinois in late fall & early spring. It would require me to get a 2nd set of tires & wheels for those times of the year. I'm trying to avoid that. At this point, my #1 option is the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. My only concern is that they won't handle as well as I'd like, being all season tires. Although, the reviews say that they handle as well as many summer tires. So, I'm going to find out. Again, it's primarily down to the run-flat / non-run-flat decision for me. I'm just not convinced yet that the noise level and ride quality will be the same as conventional tires. I guess I can always exchange them if I don't like them.”

“Slam me if you must, but I bought the Falken Azenis FK460 A/S in size 255-40x19 for my 2016 Mustang GT, based largely on Tire Rack testing and their customer comments. First thing I noticed was they are quieter than my old Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3+ tires, which were noisy when new and got worse. Also, the rear tires don't want to slip out like the Michelins when I get on the gas through a tight turn. However, the Michelins had been on the car for >6 years and 27K miles. But other than than the two categories above, it's hard for me to discern a lot of difference. Maybe it's only in my head, but perhaps the Michelins were a bit more responsive to quick motions at the steering wheel. I have no idea how well the Falkens will perform after 20K miles, but for me that's probably 4 years from now. Fair or not, I shied away from the Contis because I had read about balancing issues on a couple websites.”

How do we compare tires?

Every category score blends two independent signals. 60% comes from professional tire tests (braking distances, lap times, noise measurements), each result compared with every other tire in the same test and newer tests counting more. 40% comes from owner reviews found online, adjusted for how generously each site rates. Both use one scale: the average tested tire gets 70, the best 100. When a tire has only one of the two, the missing half is estimated from the other and the score stays closer to average; with no road test and fewer than five owner reviews it gets no score yet.

Handling is the exception: road tests measure it inside the dry and wet scores, so its own row comes from owner ratings only and starts as less important.
