Toyo Open Country A/T III
Community feedback for the Toyo Open Country A/T III is largely positive, with drivers frequently praising its traction in snow, rain, and off-road conditions, as well as its smooth ride comfort and solid tread life. While road noise and heavy unsprung weight are noted by some users, the primary complaints involve sidewall durability issues specifically on C-load ratings compared to E-load versions, alongside a recent product recall.
“I guess VAMike doesnt know what he's talking about... So i didn't actually get to do any serious 4x4. Everything in SC was dry, and i mostly walked around. But i can report of everything else. Highway noise is substantial. Its not any worse than other All Terrain tires, but its certainly not quiet. I did have to go get about 500 lbs of steel for a project, and the only trailer available was a 14000lb GVWR dual axle trailer. It towed just fine, though the tongue weight made the rear sag to the bump stops with no load. I averaged 19.5mpg, that includes ~70 miles of towing that trailer (3500lbs). For reference, my lifetime average is 21.8mpg, so i dont think my economy fell by more than 0.5-1. The only other thing i noticed that was of substance is that i shift down into 9th pretty often on the interstate, which im not thrilled about, but should have expected.”
“I upgraded to the Toyo Open Country A/T III, 285-70-17 and in the past 2 months I have got 4 flats. All from the sidewall, today was 2. I air down between 15-19 psi for the trails. Today I purposefully took it easy and had 2 flats. Are these tires junk? Is a KO2 a better stronger choice?”
“When I purchased my truck it had came with brand new open country’s and I loved them. However, they started to make some road noise at 14k miles but it honestly doesn’t bother me anymore since it’s not an extremely loud noise. As for shocks, I’ve read that bilsteins are the shock to go with on this truck. I’ve read that fox shocks are good too for a smooth ride but they aren’t as good for towing. I personally would install an air bag kit in the rear for tow with any shock.”

How do we compare tires?
Every category score blends two independent signals. 60% comes from professional tire tests (braking distances, lap times, noise measurements), each result compared with every other tire in the same test and newer tests counting more. 40% comes from owner reviews found online, adjusted for how generously each site rates. Both use one scale: the average tested tire gets 70, the best 100. When a tire has only one of the two, the missing half is estimated from the other and the score stays closer to average; with no road test and fewer than five owner reviews it gets no score yet.
Handling is the exception: road tests measure it inside the dry and wet scores, so its own row comes from owner ratings only and starts as less important.
