What owners say

No road-test results yet, so every score here comes from owner reviews found online.

How scores work
Relative score
0–100. Blends road tests (60%) and owner reviews (40%) category by category, the same way on every TireWheelGuide page. With only one of the two, the missing half is estimated from it, so the score stays closer to average. It needs at least one road test or five owner reviews.
Road tests
0–100 per score, from published tests, newer tests counting more. Each result is compared with every other tire in the same test, so a win against a strong field counts for more. The average tested tire gets 70, the best 100; with only one or two tests a tire stays nearer 70. The discipline rows show % of the best tire in that test.
Owner reviews
0–100 from the owner reviews we found online, adjusted for how generously each site rates and scaled like the road tests: the average tested tire gets 70. With only a few reviews a tire stays near the average.

What owners like and dislike

Themes extracted from 15 owner reviews found online.

Reviewers largely regard the Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow as a capable, durable winter tire for SUVs and 4x4s, with standout traction on snow and ice and in poor-road conditions. Many report long tread life, in some cases several winters and tens of thousands of miles. Criticisms centre on dry-road noise, rapid wear for some owners, and a firm ride, and one owner was disappointed enough to switch brands.

Pros

  • Excellent grip on snow and especially ice, including steep icy hills, unpaved ice-covered roads in northern Sweden, and 3+ ft of snow in the Apennines
  • Long tread life for many owners, including about 25,000 miles on a used set, 40,000+ miles over 4-5 years, and roughly 52,695 miles over 10 winters
  • Confident, stable handling in varied conditions, including high-speed driving on snowy roads, slippery B-roads, twisty country roads and motorway journeys
  • Capable with heavy and large vehicles, including regular 3-ton towing on a Land Rover Discovery 2, with no punctures reported by one owner
  • Some owners use them year-round or on light off-road tracks and report good all-round performance

Cons

  • Noise on dry pavement, mentioned by several owners
  • Rapid wear for some owners, particularly on dry roads and in warmer-season use
  • Firm or hard ride quality
  • Weaker performance in mud and off-road on larger rims, and some owners found handling or progressive grip lacking in non-winter conditions
  • Snow performance is reported as underwhelming or untested by owners in mild-winter regions, so their ratings rest on dry or wet behaviour

Worth knowing

  • Most reviews come from SUV and 4x4 owners (Land Rover Discovery 2 and LR3, Land Cruiser, Jeep Cherokee, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mercedes ML), and the heaviest-duty users, such as those towing or in deep-snow regions, gave the highest ratings.
  • A Mercedes ML owner who used the tire on 16-inch and then 17-inch rims said the 16-inch setup coped noticeably better in off-road mud, and the 17-inch set performed poorly there.
  • Owners in genuinely harsh winter climates (Sweden, the Italian Apennines, Ottawa, eastern Europe) rated the tire highly. The lowest-rated review came from a Honda CR-V owner in a mild Scottish winter.
