How scores work
- Relative score
- 0–100. Blends road tests (60%) and owner reviews (40%) category by category, the same way on every TireWheelGuide page. With only one of the two, the missing half is estimated from it, so the score stays closer to average. It needs at least one road test or five owner reviews.
- Road tests
- 0–100 per score, from published tests, newer tests counting more. Each result is compared with every other tire in the same test, so a win against a strong field counts for more. The average tested tire gets 70, the best 100; with only one or two tests a tire stays nearer 70. The discipline rows show % of the best tire in that test.
- Owner reviews
- 0–100 from the owner reviews we found online, adjusted for how generously each site rates and scaled like the road tests: the average tested tire gets 70. With only a few reviews a tire stays near the average.

The General AltiMAX RT45 is widely regarded as an exceptional-value all-season touring tire. Owners most often praise its quiet, comfortable ride, long tread life, and dependable wet and light-snow traction, and many are repeat buyers who moved over from the RT43. Complaints center on highway noise (especially as the tires wear), reduced fuel economy or EV range, and less sharp handling than premium or OEM tires. A small number of reports describe premature wear, vibration, or defects.
Pros
- Strong value for the price. Many reviewers say it matches or beats more expensive Michelin, Continental, Goodyear, and OEM tires, and many are on their 3rd to 8th set.
- Quiet, smooth, comfortable ride, often described as a big improvement over OEM tires, run-flats, and competitors such as Goodyear Assurance and Continental.
- Good wet and hydroplaning resistance. Reviewers report confidence in heavy rain and flooded roads.
- Surprisingly capable light-to-moderate snow traction for an all-season. Reviewers report good results in upstate NY, Boston, Minnesota, and the Midwest, though icy conditions are a weaker point.
- Long, even tread life. Many report 40,000–75,000 miles, and some report 7+ years, with stable, predictable handling for everyday driving.
Cons
- Road noise is the most frequent complaint. Some report a loud hum on the highway, tires that get louder as they wear (often around half-worn), and noise greater than the RT43.
- Reduced fuel economy or EV range for some owners, such as a hybrid Camry dropping from 48 to 44 mpg and an Accord Hybrid dropping from about 42 to 30–34 mpg. Others reported no change.
- Handling is less precise or sporty than premium or OEM tires, with squealing in hard cornering and tire spin from a stop.
- Some report premature wear, with 19,000–36,000 miles reported against the 60,000–70,000-mile warranty ratings.
- Quality-control and ride issues reported by some. These include balance and vibration problems, out-of-round tires, sidewall bulges, slow air leaks, a rougher ride than the RT43, and poor performance on grooved highways or ice.
Worth knowing
- EV owners (Tesla Model 3/Y, Kia) frequently praise the price, quietness, and tread wear versus OEM Continental and Michelin, but report a mix of range outcomes. One Model Y owner saw range drop from about 325–360 to 240–260 against OEM Continentals, while another saw no change. Others note less cornering grip than stock.
- Owners of Subarus, CR-Vs, RAV4s, Camrys, and other mainstream sedans, minivans, and crossovers report the most consistent satisfaction, particularly in snow and rain. Performance-oriented or heavier vehicles (Lexus NX, Acura, Mazda, Tesla) more often cite dulled handling, a firmer or rougher ride, or noise.
- Some owners moved to taller-sidewall or narrower sizes (such as 235/50-18 on a BMW, a 215/55-16 reinforced fit on an EV, and 205mm on a track-oriented car) and reported a softer ride, less noise, and better wear. The tire is also valued for being available in small and older sizes (14–15 inch) for classics and small cars.

The community largely views the General AltiMAX RT45 as an exceptional value and a worthy successor to the RT43, frequently praising its quiet ride, comfort, tread life, and strong wet performance for the price. While many view it as a compelling mid-range alternative to premium options like the Michelin Defender 2, some users note trade-offs in steering responsiveness, soft sidewalls, or limitations in severe winter conditions compared to dedicated all-weather tires.
