How to choose all-season and all-weather tires

All-season or all-weather?

Both stay on the car all year. The difference is the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF): a tire with it passed a standard snow-traction test, and is usually sold as “all-weather”; one with only an M+S marking did not have to. By the EU tyre label and the makers’ all-weather lines, 21 of the 30 tires here carry the mark — the snowflake filter above shows only them. In Quebec and on British Columbia’s designated winter routes, tires with the mark count as winter tires.

All-season or winter tires: what the tests show

In 6 winter tests that included an all-season tire, the best all-season tire needed a median 0.5 m more than the best winter tire to stop on snow.

On ice the spread is wider: in 6 tests, the best and worst tire of the same test stopped a median 3.8 m apart.

Where tires differ most

  • Wet braking: 7.4 m. That is the median gap between the best and the worst tire of the same test, across 43 tests since 2023.
  • Dry braking: 5.3 m between best and worst, in 44 tests.
  • Snow braking: 3.0 m between best and worst, in 32 tests.
  • Noise: 2.4 dB between the quietest and the loudest, in 31 tests. The noise score adds what owners hear over thousands of miles.
  • Tread life: 73% longer for the longest-lasting tire than the shortest-lasting, in 9 wear tests.

Our short answer

Michelin CrossClimate 3 leads this ranking, and Michelin CrossClimate 2 scores highest in snow.

How we rank

Each tire’s score blends independent road tests (60%: braking distances, lap times, noise measured by the testers) with owner reviews found online (40%; comfort 40/60), all on one scale where the average tested tire gets 70. Newer tests count more, and each result is weighed against the other tires in the same test.

The ± after a score is its margin of error: with more tests and reviews the score would most likely stay within it. The list ranks by the score less a margin for thin evidence, so a lucky result never wins, and a tire replaced by a newer generation drops back. A tire needs two road tests or enough owner reviews to be listed.

Testers behind this list include Auto Bild, Auto Express, Tire Rack, Auto Bild Allrad, Auto Zeitung, ADAC, Auto Motor und Sport, TÜV.
