The ranking: 30 tires

Ranked by Relative Score less a margin for thin evidence, so a tire proven in twenty tests stays ahead of one lucky result; a tire replaced by a newer generation drops back. Of 1,010 rated tires of this kind, these are the top 30. Click a column to sort.

How to choose summer tires

What the summer tests show

Wet braking is where summer tires differ most: the best and the worst tire of the same test stopped a median 8.5 m apart, across 47 tests since 2023. On dry roads the gap was 4.0 m (48 tests).

Tread life differs even more: in 10 wear tests the longest-lasting tire went a median 134% further than the shortest. Check the treadwear column next to the dry one.

Buying and using them

  • Noise: 2.9 dB between the quietest and loudest tire of a test (27 tests).
  • The right speed rating for your car: at least what the door-jamb sticker says.
  • Not for cold or snow: below about 45°F (7°C) summer rubber loses grip.

Our short answer

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 leads this ranking.

How we rank

Each tire’s score blends independent road tests (60%: braking distances, lap times, noise measured by the testers) with owner reviews found online (40%; comfort 40/60), all on one scale where the average tested tire gets 70. Newer tests count more, and each result is weighed against the other tires in the same test.

The ± after a score is its margin of error: with more tests and reviews the score would most likely stay within it. The list ranks by the score less a margin for thin evidence, so a lucky result never wins, and a tire replaced by a newer generation drops back. A tire needs two road tests or enough owner reviews to be listed.

Testers behind this list include Auto Bild, Sport Auto, Auto Express, Auto Bild Sportscars, Auto Motor und Sport, Auto Bild Allrad, ADAC, evo.
